Agentic Commerce

We're moving toward a disintermediated web where your site is no longer a destination but a data source. Agentic commerce is the commercial face of that shift, where AI agents discover, compare, and buy on a person's behalf, powered by the content and feeds you optimize to make yourself visible and legible to machines.

The web is becoming disintermediated

For years, your website was a destination: users navigated to your domain, browsed your pages, and bought from you directly. Agentic commerce inverts that model. Your site is now a data source. AI agents crawl your data, integrate it with competitors, and present curated choices to the user inside their chat interface. The human never leaves the model; your pages become raw material for someone else's product.

This matters because visibility is no longer about traffic. It is about whether machines can find you, understand your products, and choose to represent you in their recommendations. That requires optimized data, properly structured feeds, and integrations that speak the language agents understand.

What is agentic commerce?

Agentic commerce is the emerging model where an AI agent powered by an LLM does the shopping work: it interprets a need, researches options, fetches live product data from your feeds, narrows a shortlist, and in a growing number of cases completes the purchase, all on the user's behalf. The agent is the buyer.

It is the commercial edge of AI search. Where AI answers already influence what people consider, agentic commerce moves the model from advisor to active buyer, making the shortlist it assembles the only choice the user sees.

How machines talk to your data: WebMCP and agent protocols

For an agent to shop on your behalf, it needs to read your data in real time. That requires a protocol. WebMCP (Web Model Context Protocol) is an emerging standard that lets AI models connect to web services, query APIs, and fetch live data without leaving the chat. It is the backbone of how agents will access your product feeds, inventory, and pricing.

Two complementary protocols are shaping how agents interact with commerce platforms:

  • UCP (Unified Commerce Protocol) is a broader standard for structuring data so any system can read it. It is data-agnostic: if your feed speaks UCP, agents and platforms from different vendors can parse it consistently. Think of it as the grammar for machine-readable commerce data.
  • ACP (Agent Commerce Protocol) is agent-specific. It focuses on what agentic systems need: real-time inventory, deterministic product matching, price signals, reviews and whether a product is actually buyable right now. ACP is faster and more action-oriented; UCP is broader and more flexible.

In practice, the future is both. Your feed needs to speak UCP so any system can read it, but you also need ACP-optimized data layers so agents can act decisively. Shopify, for instance, is moving aggressively toward both by exposing product data through APIs and feed standards that agents understand natively.

Feeds are now your sales channel

A product feed used to be a secondary channel: the XML you gave to Google Shopping or a marketplace. Now it is your primary interface to agentic commerce. If an agent cannot read your feed, it cannot recommend you.

Feed optimization for agentic commerce means:

  • Structured, real-time data: Product names, descriptions, pricing, SKUs, images, availability and reviews must be machine-readable and current. Stale data kills visibility.
  • Granular product information: Agents need specificity: color, size, material, certifications, sustainability claims. Generic descriptions lose to detailed competitors.
  • Price and inventory signals: Live pricing and stock status let agents make accurate recommendations. If your feed says in stock when you are out, agents will prefer competitors they can trust.
  • Reviews and credibility: Agents weight user ratings heavily. A feed stripped of reviews loses competitive standing.

The outcome: your feed is no longer a marketing afterthought. It is the source of truth for your machine visibility.

Shopify: Leading the shift to agent-ready commerce

Shopify is moving aggressively to make merchants visible to agentic systems. It has introduced native integrations with ChatGPT and other AI platforms, allowing Shopify stores to surface directly in AI shopping interfaces. Products from Shopify stores can now be discovered, compared and purchased inside ChatGPT with Shopify handling the transaction.

This is a pivotal moment. Shopify is essentially saying: we will be your agent gateway. Your store speaks our data format, we handle the API layer, and we ensure agents can buy from you. Merchants on Shopify get visibility to agentic channels almost for free; everyone else must build and maintain it themselves.

The implication: if you are not on Shopify, you need your own UCP/ACP-compliant API or feed standard. If you are on Shopify, you need to ensure your product data is complete and correctly structured because agents will read it directly from Shopify's normalized data layer.

Why agentic commerce matters for brands

When an agent assembles the shortlist, the brands it does not surface are simply never considered. There is no second page to scroll to. Your AI Visibility stops being about traffic and starts being about whether machines can find, understand and choose to represent your products.

This is why Share of Shelf will become as important as Share of Answers. Share of Shelf measures how often your brand appears in the product recommendations agents make across all the models people use. It is the agentic equivalent of shelf space in a store: if you are not on the shelf, you do not get sold.

How to prepare for agentic commerce

Preparing for agentic commerce means optimizing three layers:

  • Optimize your data: Every product detail matters. Ensure your database is structured, current, and rich with attributes agents need to make decisions.
  • Expose your data through standard feeds: Build or adopt UCP and ACP-compliant feeds. If you use Shopify, verify your product data is complete. If not, build your own API or feed that agents can query reliably.
  • Integrate with agent platforms: Begin connecting to ChatGPT Shopping, Perplexity, and other commerce-enabled AI platforms. Make it easy for agents to find and transact your products.
  • Measure Share of Shelf: Track how often and how prominently your products appear in agent recommendations. This is your new visibility metric.

Prominence AI lets you measure how your brand and products show up when models recommend what to choose in your category, across every major engine, inside Metrics & Benchmarking. As agentic commerce scales, measuring your shelf presence will become essential.
