Grounding

Grounding is how an AI model anchors its answer in real sources live web results or a knowledge base instead of relying only on what it memorised during training.

What is grounding?

Grounding is the step where a large language model retrieves external information usually live web results or a curated knowledge base and uses it to construct its answer, rather than answering purely from its training data.

It is what lets an AI assistant answer questions about recent events, current pricing or fast-moving categories, and what produces the sources you see cited in the response.

Grounded vs. ungrounded answers

An ungrounded answer is generated from the model’s internal parameters alone fast, but prone to going stale or hallucinating. A grounded answer is checked against external sources, making it fresher and more verifiable.

For brands this distinction is decisive: when an answer is grounded, the sources it pulls from are exactly the content you can influence to change what it says.

Why grounding matters for GEO

Because grounded answers are built on retrievable sources, influencing those sources is the heart of Generative Engine Optimization. Knowing what a model grounds on tells you precisely where to focus to earn citations and grow your AI Visibility.

How Prominence AI uses grounding data

Prominence AI captures the sources models ground on in your category through Grounding Source Prominence, turning a hidden process into a map of the domains and pages you need to influence.
