Domain Authority

Domain authority in AI search is how much an answer engine trusts your website as a source worth retrieving, quoting, and citing. It's related to the SEO idea of authority but judged for a different job: not "should this page rank?" but "should I build my answer on this site?"

Why it matters

  • It gates citations. You can write excellent, citable content and still not be cited if the engine doesn't trust the domain hosting it.
  • It compounds. Every time your domain is cited, the association between it and the topic strengthens, making future citations more likely.
  • It's the attribution anchor. Your domain is also how citations get credited to your brand, so it's central to both earning and measuring visibility.

What builds domain authority for AI

Much of it overlaps with strong SEO and brand-building: a track record of accurate, in-depth content on your core topics; earned references and links from other trusted sites; consistent entity signals (clear, stable brand naming and aliases); and technical accessibility so AI crawlers can actually read you. Breadth of authoritative mentions across the web reinforces it further.

How it shows up in measurement

You can see authority indirectly through citation data: how often your domain is cited across your category's answers, on which topics, and versus which competing domains. A rising share of citations is evidence your domain authority in AI search is growing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this the same as an SEO "domain authority" score?

No. There's no single official number here. It's a conceptual trust signal inferred from retrieval and citation behavior, judged for grounding rather than ranking, though the foundations overlap heavily with SEO.

Can a new domain earn AI authority quickly?

It takes time and accumulated trust signals, but focused, authoritative content on a well-defined topic can start earning citations faster than trying to be authoritative on everything at once.
