Prominence
Prominence is a measure of how visible and central a brand is inside AI-generated answers. It goes beyond a yes/no "were we mentioned?" to capture how strongly a brand shows up: how often it appears, how early and emphatically it's named, whether it's cited as a source, and how it compares to competitors in the same answer.
What is prominence?
Two brands can both be "mentioned" in an AI answer and have completely different prominence. One is named first, described as the category leader, and cited with a link. The other is a passing aside in the last sentence. Prominence captures that difference: it's the AI-era equivalent of the gap between the featured result and a footnote.
In practice, prominence blends several signals into one view of visibility: mention frequency, Share of Answers, position and emphasis within the answer, and citation strength.
Why prominence matters
Presence alone is a weak goal. If a user reads an AI answer and your brand is buried while a rival is spotlighted, you've technically "appeared" and still lost the decision. Prominence matters because it aligns measurement with the outcome that counts: being the brand the answer actually steers the user toward.
It also makes progress legible. A rising prominence score means you're not just squeaking into answers; you're becoming the answer.
How prominence is measured
Prominence is computed across a defined set of tracked prompts and LLM providers, aggregated into intent segments, and compared over time using deltas. Because it's benchmarked against a competitor set, prominence is best read as a relative score, your share of the attention an answer has to give.
How to improve prominence
Improving prominence is the goal of a GEO program: earn more frequent mentions, move from passing references to cited, authoritative ones, and win the intent segments where your buyers actually ask questions.
Frequently Asked Questions
How is prominence different from a brand mention?
A brand mention is binary: you're named or you're not. Prominence weighs how you're named: position, emphasis, frequency, and whether you're cited.
Is prominence a single number?
It can be expressed as a headline score, but it's most useful broken down by AI model and intent segment, so you can see exactly where you're strong or weak.
Brand Mention
A brand mention is any reference to your brand inside an AI-generated answer: named, abbreviated, or referred to by a hero product.
Share of Answers
The percentage of tracked AI answers in your category in which your brand appears at all.
Average Position
Average Position measures where your brand tends to land inside an AI answer: named first and led with, or mentioned last and buried.
Citations
The sources an AI model links to or references to support the answer it generates.
