Prompt
A prompt is the natural-language request that triggers an AI model's answer. In AI search, it is the starting point of everything a model says about your brand.
What is a prompt?
A prompt is the natural-language input a user gives to a large language model (LLM) such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude or Perplexity to get an answer. It can be a question, an instruction, or a short description of a task.
In the context of AI Search and Generative Engine Optimization (GEO), prompts are the queries people type when they research products, brands and categories through AI assistants instead of a traditional search box.
Why prompts matter for AI visibility
Every AI answer starts with a prompt. The wording of that prompt shapes which brands the model names, how it describes them, and which sources it cites.
That makes the prompt the unit of measurement for AI brand visibility. To know whether your brand appears in AI answers, you have to track the specific prompts your buyers actually use, continuously and across every engine.
Types of prompts
Not all prompts behave the same way. A few categories matter most for brands:
- Unbranded prompts category questions that name no brand ("best CRM for startups").
- Branded prompts prompts that name a specific brand ("is HubSpot good for startups?").
- Comparative prompts prompts that pit brands against each other ("HubSpot vs Salesforce").
- Transactional prompts prompts with buying intent ("best noise-cancelling headphones to buy").
Prompts vs. keywords
Traditional SEO is built around keywords: short, fragmented search terms. Prompts are longer, conversational and context-rich, and a single prompt can return a full answer that names several brands at once.
This is why GEO and answer-engine optimization (AEO) track prompts rather than keywords the prompt, not the keyword, is what produces the answer your buyers read.
How Prominence AI uses prompts
Prominence AI tracks a stable set of prompts for your category across every major AI engine and turns the answers into reliable metrics like Share of Answer and Share of Mention.
Our Prompt Explorer lets you build, organise and monitor those prompts over time, so raw AI responses become a dependable view of your visibility instead of one-off screenshots.
Branded Prompts
Prompts that explicitly name a brand, used to see how AI models describe that specific brand.
Unbranded Prompts
Category prompts that name no brand, like "best CRM for startups", used to measure whether AI answers discover you at all.
Comparative Prompts
Prompts that pit brands against each other, like "X vs Y", showing how AI models frame you at high-stakes decision moments.
Transactional Prompts
Buying-intent prompts like "best X to buy", where AI answers shape purchases and agentic commerce begins.
Prompt Segmentation
Organizing tracked prompts by product, vertical, and intent so AI visibility metrics show exactly where your narrative breaks.
Buyer Intent
Buyer intent is the stage of the purchase journey that a prompt reveals, from early awareness to active decision.
