Ad Trigger Rate
Ad trigger rate is the share of tracked prompts whose AI answers surface a paid placement. It's the headline metric of paid visibility in answer engines: a single number that says how "monetized" a set of queries is, how often asking the question produces an ad.
What is ad trigger rate?
Run a set of prompts and record, for each, whether the answer included ChatGPT Ads or similar paid placements. The proportion that did is the ad trigger rate. If forty of a hundred tracked prompts return an ad, the trigger rate is 40%. Tracked over time and across segments, it reveals where commercial competition in AI answers is heating up.
Why ad trigger rate matters
- It maps commercial intent. Queries that trigger ads are ones advertisers judge worth paying for, a signal of where money and buyer intent concentrate.
- It sizes the paid surface. A rising trigger rate means more of your category's answers now carry ads, changing how much organic real estate is left.
- It prioritizes response. High-trigger segments are where you most need to decide between earning organic presence and competing on the paid surface.
How to read it
Break trigger rate down by intent segment and by provider: ads may cluster on high-commercial-intent questions (comparisons, "best of", buying) and be rare on informational ones. Compare your own brand's trigger line against the market to see whether the queries you care about are being monetized around you.
How it connects to other metrics
Ad trigger rate sets the stage for the rest of the paid picture: which advertisers appear on triggered prompts, which networks deliver them, and how that paid presence overlaps or diverges from your organic Share of Answer: the organic vs. paid analysis.
Frequently asked questions
Does a high trigger rate mean I should advertise?
Not automatically. It flags commercial competition, but the right response depends on your organic strength there. Sometimes you already win the answer organically and don't need to pay.
Is ad trigger rate the same as ad impressions?
No. Trigger rate is the share of prompts that show any ad; impressions count how often a specific advertiser appears. One measures the surface, the other measures presence on it.
ChatGPT Ads
ChatGPT Ads are paid placements that appear inside ChatGPT's answers: sponsored products and brands surfaced alongside the organic response.
Organic vs Paid Visibility
The distinction between earning a mention in AI answers and paying for placement, as ads arrive in AI search.
Ads Shelf & Creative
The ads shelf is the carousel of paid product cards that appears inside an AI answer, and the creative is the content of each card: its image, title, and body copy.
Share of Answers
The percentage of tracked AI answers in your category in which your brand appears at all.
Prompt Segmentation
Organizing tracked prompts by product, vertical, and intent so AI visibility metrics show exactly where your narrative breaks.
