ChatGPT Ads

ChatGPT Ads are paid placements that appear inside ChatGPT's answers: sponsored products and brands surfaced alongside the organic response. They mark the arrival of a paid layer in answer engines, a new surface where visibility can be bought, not only earned, and therefore a new thing brands need to measure.

What are ChatGPT Ads?

Alongside the text answer, ChatGPT can display sponsored placements, often a shelf of products with images, titles, and links. Each placement names an advertiser, points to a landing URL, and carries campaign parameters that reveal which ad network delivered it. It's advertising rendered natively inside the conversation.

Why ChatGPT Ads matter

  • A new paid surface. For the first time, brands can pay to appear in AI answers, changing the competitive dynamics of AI visibility.
  • They sit next to organic. Paid placements appear beside the organic mentions you earn through GEO, so the two now have to be understood together.
  • They reveal the market. Even if you don't advertise, monitoring who does, and on which queries, is competitive intelligence about where rivals are spending.

What a ChatGPT Ad contains

  • Advertiser & landing URL: the brand and where the click goes.
  • Creative: image, title, and body, often as a carousel or ads shelf.
  • Campaign parameters: om_mmc and UTM tags that decode the network, campaign, and creative behind the placement.

How ChatGPT Ads are measured

Monitoring paid placements means capturing them across tracked prompts and analyzing which queries trigger ads (see ad trigger rate), which advertisers appear, which networks deliver them, and how paid presence compares to organic: the organic vs. paid view.

Frequently asked questions

Are ChatGPT Ads the same as organic mentions?

No. Organic mentions are earned by the model choosing your brand; ChatGPT Ads are paid placements. Measuring them separately, and together, is the point.

Why track ChatGPT Ads if I don't run them?

To see where competitors are paying for visibility, which queries attract ad spend, and whether paid activity is filling gaps in your organic presence.
