Organic vs Paid Visibility

Organic vs paid visibility compares two ways a brand shows up in AI answers: the presence you earn through GEO, organic mentions and citations, versus the presence brands buy through paid placements. Reading them side by side reveals gaps, opportunities, and overlap that neither view shows alone.

What is the organic vs paid comparison?

For each query, you can ask two questions: does the model name my brand organically, and does an ad for my brand (or a competitor's) appear? Cross those two dimensions and every prompt falls into a quadrant: strong organic and no paid, paid but weak organic, both, or neither. Mapping your prompts this way turns scattered data into a clear strategic picture.

Why it matters

  • It finds the gaps. Prompts where competitors advertise but you have no organic presence are exposed positions worth addressing.
  • It reveals opportunities. Queries you win organically with little paid competition are efficient wins to defend.
  • It exposes waste. Paying for placements on queries you already dominate organically may be spending for demand you'd capture anyway, a form of cannibalization.

The four situations

  • Organic strength: strong organic, little paid; protect and harvest.
  • Cannibalization risk: strong organic and heavy paid; are you paying for owned demand?
  • Paid-only gap: weak organic, heavy paid; an organic opportunity to reduce reliance on spend.
  • Whitespace: low on both; uncontested ground to consider.

How it's measured

The comparison joins your organic Share of Answer with paid signals like ad trigger rate and advertiser presence, per prompt and per segment. Drilling into a prompt shows exactly where paid and organic coverage diverge, the gap that guides where to invest in content versus ads.

Frequently asked questions

Should I advertise where I'm already strong organically?

Often not at full weight, that's potential cannibalization. The comparison helps you redirect spend toward gaps instead.

Can organic and paid reinforce each other?

Yes. On high-intent, competitive queries, combined presence can be worth it. The point of the comparison is to make that a deliberate choice, not an accident.
